Safer route to school for pupils

4:20pm Wednesday 10th March 2010

PUPILS at a Caerphilly school will be able to get to school safer after a grant of £400,000 was obtained from the Welsh Assembly.

St Cenydd Comprehensive School in Caerphilly has received the 'Safer Routes in Communities' funding and has involved pupils in the design of safer routes to the school. Planning of the scheme has been built into lessons and pupils have been active in publicising it within the community.

Ian Kilcoyne, Head Teacher at St Cenydd, said: "Our school is delighted to be involved in the Safer Routes in Communities initiative.

"Many pupils have long wanted to walk or cycle to school, but have not been able to do so due to the dangerous road conditions.

"When the scheme is completed, not only will it ease the traffic congestion in St Cenydd Road at the start and end of the day, it will also enable many more pupils to walk to school, and many to cycle which they have not been able to do up until now."

Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert has welcomed the news and said: "This initiative has made a real difference in improving accessibility throughout communities across Wales.

"This grant is another example of how the Welsh Assembly Government is working with local government and schools to improve safer routes in the communities.

"This partnership approach is the way forward, for our efforts to create a brighter future for Caerphilly and the Aber Valley."
